Dave Grohl has once again proven that he’s one of the coolest guys in music. During a performance at this year’s Lollapaloozafestival, the artist invited his daughter Violet onstage for a cover of X’s classic punk song “Nausea.”
The family friendly set also included a rendition of “Happy Birthday” dedicated to his other daughter Ophelia.
Foo Fighters invited the young musician onstage after Grohl revealed the plan to the crowd. “Tonight, I have to do it,” Grohl said in between songs. “You know, I brought my family with me tonight. And the reason why is because my daughter Ophelia turns 7 tonight, so this is a big night.”
The singer then proceeds to lead a coliseum-sized rendition of “Happy Birthday” while his now 7-year-old daughter, nicknamed “Fifi,” rocks back and forth. Having three daughters, the singer wasn’t content to pay homage to only one.
“Hold on, I got another one,” he said after the birthday wishes. “If you stick around long enough, maybe your daughter will join your band too. So since my daughter Violet Grohl is in the Foo Fighters now, I figured, ‘Why don’t we come out and sing a song for Lollapalooza tonight?’
“Oh yeah, take your time,” the singer said as his daughter casually strolled across the stage. After a brief introduction and a bit of teasing, the two got ready to play a family inspired single.
“Not only is she the most badass person I know in my life, but she also likes to listen to the punk-rock music that I like to listen to too,” Grohl continued. “There’s a band from Los Angeles that we love. They’re called X, and it’s a long story, but that drummer DJ Bonebrake, we’re actually related to each other ’cause my grandmother’s name was Bonebrake, and that’s no bullshit. So Violet and I decided we’d record a song together to pay tribute, not only to the band, X, but also to our family. So ladies and gentleman, Foo Fighters with Violet Grohl singing a song called ‘Nausea’ by X. It goes like this.”
After a quick three-count drum intro, the group launch into the explosive power chords that defined the 1980 classic. It actually wasn’t the first time they played the song together, either. The two performed the heavy-hitting single on Jimmy Kimmel after recording a studio version of the song in April 2021.
Afterward, the singer praised his daughter and the festival itself.
“Ladies and gentleman, I gotta be honest,” Grohl concludes. “I’m a lucky man. ’Cause see that? That’s the next generation ofrock ’n’ roll. That’s why I love this festival. There are so many young artists, and it’s great.”
The Lollapalooza performance marked the third appearance of Foo Fighters since they launched their 2021 tour. If you couldn’t make it to the jam-packed festival this year, you can stream it on Hulu.
Foo Fighters only recently began their tour, and performances are selling out fast. You can find tickets to upcoming dates here and see tour dates below.
