Are these Taylor Swift and Paramore songs connected to each other?

This past week, a new fan theory has emerged that may blow Paramore and Taylor Swift fans’ minds.

One TikTok user noticed a few similarities between two classics songs from the artists. Now, they are explaining why they think “Better Than Revenge” and “Misery Business” are actually connected to each other.

Paramore and Taylor Swift have quite the history. Back in 2011, Hayley Williams performed “That’s What You Get” with Swift during her Speak Now tour. As well, Williams is also part of the star-studded cast in Swift’s “Bad Blood” video.

Now, it looks like their music may even be connected. This past week, TikTok user @hazythorn shared a theory on the platform that is catching a lot of people’s attention. After listening to Swift’s 2010 track “Better Than Revenge,” they noticed an eerie resemblance to Paramore’s classic “Misery Business.” 

Based on Swift’s lyrics, @hazythorn thinks the track is actually in response to “Misery Business” and is from the perspective of the other girl mentioned in the Paramore song. After their first video caught the attention of many, @hazythorn shared a separate video explaining the reasoning behind their theory.

As it turns out, there are quite a few lyrical parallels in both songs. One example can be found towards the beginning of both tracks. Williams sings, “two weeks and we had caught on fire,” referencing a relationship that started quickly.

Meanwhile, on “Better Than Revenge,” Swift sings, “she came along got him alone let’s hear the applause she took him faster than you can say sabotage.” Both lyrics are heavily referencing a relationship that began quicker than either party anticipated.

However, this isn’t the only lyrical similarity between the two songs. Paramore’s “Misery Business” also includes the lyrics, “there’s a million other girls who do it just like you.” Similarly, Swift sings, “she looks at me like I’m a trend and she’s so over it” on “Better Than Revenge.” Both lyrics are seemingly pointing out that the mystery girl in Paramore’s song is viewed as someone who just follows along with what everyone else is doing.

Although these songs were released over a decade ago, both Taylor Swift and Paramore have been keeping busy in 2020. Last week, Swift’s ninth studio album evermore made history on Billboard’s Alternative Albums chart. As well, Swift has also debunked that fan theory that a third surprise album could be on the way.

As for Paramore, it looks like Hayley Williams has given a subtle hint about when we could finally hear new music. Last week, Williams shared a tweet about the significance of her turning 32. She closes out the tweet with “bye til 2021,” a hint that Paramore fans may have to wait until next year to hear any new material.

Speculation about Paramore working on new music has been swirling for months. Back in October, some slight changes to the band’s social media platforms led to fans theorizing new music could be on the way. Then, following a comment from Jimmy Fallon, Paramore shared a cryptic message seemingly confirming they are working on new music.

Paramore’s “Misery Business” and Taylor Swift’s “Better Than Revenge” are available to stream below.
