Bad Suns’ Christo Bowman knows exactly who he’d bring on his dream tour

Bad Suns are setting the bar incredibly high for this summer. With their dreamy new single “Heaven Is A Place In My Head” hitting streaming this week, the group are channeling the energy they exude onstage into the track. Painting vivid imagery through lyrics such as, “Summer nеver lasts as long as you want it to/As long as I’m next to you, don’t wake me/I’m living in a goddamn daydream/Nothing ever lasts as long as you want it to,” the group succeed in making summer feel endless.

“This song is special to us because it came so close to never existing,” vocalist Christo Bowman exclusively told Alternative Press. “In May of last year we were all in the process of experimenting with writing songs together over the internet. We jumped on a video call and I played the guys this piece of music I’d written the day before. I was really missing performing and wanted us to create something which channeled the energy of one of our live shows. We wrote the melodies and lyrics, and it then sat in our dropbox for several months, essentially forgotten. Then in January of 2021, as we were nearing the end of our recording process, our producer played the demo and we all looked at each other and collectively thought, ‘This is amazing, why haven’t we recorded this?’”

What fans will be surprised by on your next release.

The melodies and the guitar solo. The morning after we wrote this tune, I woke up with its heavenly chorus playing over and over again in my head.

First song or album you remember being influenced by growing up.

I remember being 5 years old, sitting in front of the TV and seeing [blink-182’s] “All The Small Things” music video for the very first time. I sat there for hours and waited for it to come on again and again. That was my gateway into wanting to pick up a guitar and write pop music.

A song you wish you had written.

This is so hard, but could you imagine if you wrote the song “Everybody Hurts” by R.E.M.? A timeless classic that gives me the chills each time I hear it. It’s incredibly beautiful, somber and hopeful all at the same time.

Three essential items you never go on tour without.

I’ll bring my running shoes and run four miles through every city we play in before showtime to get a feel for the environment. I always bring a stack of books to keep me occupied on the road. If you have a particularly long tour or trip in front of you, allow me to recommend 1Q84 by Haruki Murakami. I’m only a fragment of myself without my AirPods.

I would sell my soul to write a song with Robert Smith of the Cure or Tom Petty (R.I.P.).

The first person you play never music for.

My girlfriend, Ally, every time. I can always tell when she genuinely loves a new song, and I can always tell when she doesn’t want me to feel bad for writing a stinker and just smiles anyway.

An artist or musician to design your next album artwork.

I love working with artists and bringing album art concepts to life. Scott Hansen from Tycho is amazing, and I’d be thrilled to collaborate with him in any capacity, visual or musical for that matter.

Emerging artists you think everyone should be listening to.

I’ve been loving the new album The Internet by Glüme. The songwriting and production are so entrancing and vibey. Adam Melchor’s new mixtape Melchor Lullaby Hotline, Vol. 1 has been putting me in a fantastic mood lately. Claud’s new album Super Monster is so fresh.

Rituals before writing or recording.

Lately I’ll wake up at 6 or 7 a.m., make a pot of coffee, throw on some music, drive to the beach and surf for a few hours. Then I’ll drive home, and if a chord progression or groove comes to mind and strikes me emotionally, I’ll be inspired to start writing a song once I sit down at my desk.
