It’s clear that Billy Corgan is a big fan of Lil Peep and the work he released before his sudden death in 2017. A year after his passing, the Smashing Pumpkins singer compared Lil Peep to Metallica. Although the comparison seemed rather far-fetched, Corgan’s reasoning was strictly music-related.

In an interview for the Build series, Corgan explained how bands such as Metallica unleashed a set of emotions in the suburban underground, something that Smashing Pumpkins would continue to do years later. For Corgan, he believes Lil Peep was an artist capable of unleashing the same feelings in his music.

“Unfortunately, Lil Peep, probably of all the artists I’ve heard recently tapped into that same angst,” he said. “And it’s so sad he passed away because he was just getting to the bigger part of this work.”

During the interview, Corgan noted that he gets the “exact same vibe” listening to Lil Peep’s music as he does while blasting Metallica.

“He somehow, when I heard Lil Peep I was like, ‘That’s exactly that same vibe,’” he said. “It’s like, I’m at the 7-Eleven and I have all these deep feelings and thoughts and the 7-Eleven is the epicenter of my universe. For a lot of people, that is their life.”

Now, it looks like Corgan is making a few more comparisons to Lil Peep’s music. During a recent interview with Upset, Corgan opens up about Smashing Pumpkins’ latest album CYR and calls the late rapper this generation’s Kurt Cobain.

“’This album is the result of us trying to come into the modern world,’” Corgan says but rather than just use Lil Peep inspired beats (an artist who he believes was “his generation’s Kurt Cobain”), the band wanted it to feel like their own trip.”

Despite it being over three years since Lil Peep’s passing, fans are still hearing new music from him. Back in September, his Hellboy mixtape was released onto streaming services for the first time ever.

As for Smashing Pumpkins, a lot of fans weren’t too happy in December. The boyband Why Don’t We sampled the classic1979” for their new song “Slow Down.” However, it appears the band may have taken the sampling a bit too far.
