Irish indie music legend Cathal Coughlan of Microdisney and Fatima Mansions fame will return this Friday with his first new solo album in ten years. Titled Song of Co-Aklan, a tongue in cheek reference to the pronunciation of his surname, the album is typically full of ingenious turns of phrase married to driving and theatrical indie anthems.
The record was recorded in London and features the Grand Necropolitan Quartet whose members read like a whos who of indie awesomeness: Nick Allum (The Fatima Mansions, The Apartments) is on drums, James Woodrow is on guitar, with cello by Audrey Riley (notable collaborator of Lush, The Sundays, The Smiths, Nick Cave, The Cure, The Go-Betweens, Smashing Pumpkins, Catherine Wheel, Moloko and Coldplay) while Rhodri Marsden (Sritti Politti) rounds out the line upon bass.
The album also features contributions from Luke Haines (The Auteurs, Black Box Recorder) on bass and baritone guitar. The arresting cover was designed by outsider artist Cristabel Christo and originated by Bruce Brand, who has worked with The Darkness and Whites Stripes.
