Daft Punk announce their break up with this powerful video—watch

After 28 years of creating music together, French duo Daft Punk have officially announced they are retiring.

On Monday, Feb. 22, the duo released a powerful new video confirming the break-up news.

Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk in 1993 while living in Paris. Together, the duo helped define French house music with their debut album Homework, which was released in 1997. Since then, Daft Punk have gone on to release various other albums including the film score for TRON: Legacy and 2001’s Discovery. The latter LP features classic singles such as “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger.”

2013 marked a real turning point for Daft Punk with the release of “Get Lucky.” The hit single, which features Pharrell Williams, won numerous awards including Record Of The Year at the Grammys. Four years later, Daft Punk made their live comeback performance with the Weeknd for the 2017 Grammy Awards. Together, they performed their explosive collaboration “Starboy / I Feel It Coming.”

However, the French duo has now officially announced they are breaking up. On Feb. 22, Daft Punk debuted a powerful new video titled Epilogue. The 8-minute visual shows the duo meeting in the desert before an unexpected incident brings the video to a close with the simple message, “1993 – 2021.”

According to Variety, Daft Punk’s publicist has confirmed the group are retiring. However, it has not been revealed if the duo will work together under a different project name or if they have separate projects in the works.
