Over the past few years, some artists in the emo music scene have transitioned into the world of country music. As it turns out,Dan Smyers of the country duo Dan + Shay is one of those musicians who made the genre jump.
In fact, Smyers was once in an emo band that opened up for All Time Lowin the mid-2000s.
Dan + Shay have quickly become one of country music’s most popular acts. Currently, they have over 15 million monthly listeners onSpotify and they are even nominated at the Grammys this year. Their megahit collab “10,000 Hours” withJustin Bieberis nominated for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the now-postponed 2021 awards show.
However, long before Dan + Shay were rubbing shoulders with tourmates such as Shawn Mendes and the Band CAMINO, Dan Smyers was rocking out in his emo band Transition. All the way back in 2017, Smyers shared some never-before-seen photos of him in his former band that are a true throwback to the 2000s.
Smyers can be seen performing on stage in a Houston Calls black tank top with a black choker around his neck.
Then, this week, a TikTokemerged that revealed Transition once opened up for All Time Low in the mid-2000s. TikTok user @ariellegonzalezz shared a series of photos from the performance.
Despite the fact that Smyers went on to start Dan + Shay and move into the country world, the duo still have quite a few surprising ties to the emo music scene. Justin Richards, of Brighten and formerly A Rocket To The Moon, is one of their touring guitarists.
