Did you spot this ‘Gremlins’ nod in McDonald’s new commercial?

McDonald’s festive new Christmas commercial is capturing the attention of movie buffs for a good reason. For the new advertisement, the fast-food chain decided to take some inspiration from films such as the Gremlins, Elf and How The Grinch Stole Christmas.

However, if you blink too fast, you might just miss all of these clever movie nods.

2020 has definitely been full of highs and lows for McDonald’s. The fast-food chain saw a massive increase in sales after it partnered with Travis Scott for the exclusive Cactus Jack meal. However, ingredient shortages across the country eventually earned backlash from fans. Similarly, McDonald’s customers still aren’t over the company’s decision to change when their all-day breakfast menu is available.

Then, in November, McDonald’s announced a positive change. The fast-food company is officially launching its first-ever plant burger. Despite customers’ excitement about the news, the plant burger became the center of meme culture after its name was revealed.

Now, it looks like McDonald’s is appealing to movie lovers this holiday season. This week, the company launched its new festive Christmas commercial that is full of nods to some of our favorite films. McDonald’s is celebrating the holiday season with its “Free Daily Holiday Deals” promotion. Customers can access these daily deals on the McDonald’s app with a $1 purchase.

To promote the thrifty new deal, McDonald’s called in a few familiar faces. However, if you blink too quickly, you just might miss them. For Gremlins fans, they are finally being reunited with Gizmo in the McDonald’s commercial. It’s been decades since the beloved character last appeared in 1990’s Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Now, Gizmo is making a return (and eating some of your chicken nuggets, too).

Gizmo appears in the new McDonald’s commercial at around the 13-second mark. The Gremlins character’s hand can be seen snatching a few crispy chicken nuggets before disappearing back into a backpack. The quick Gremlins nod is one of many that appear in the new advertisement.

How The Grinch Stole Christmas fans get to see the Grinch enjoy a plate of cookies and milk meant for Santa Claus. As well, Buddy The Elf’s iconic syrupy pancakes stack also makes an appearance. 

Even though Gizmo’s cameo in the McDonald’s commercial was brief, it won’t be long before we see the furry creature again. HBO Max’s animated series Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai officially arrives next year.
