Frances Gein, the young Scottish alt-rock artist has just released her latest single, Mud on 17th September.

Following on from her May release, Kiss The Sky; Dundee born Gein, who only actually began learning guitar at the start of the lockdown in 2020, delivers a catchy but brooding tune that builds throughout. The lyrics having a dark side to them, dealing with an abusive relationship albeit with a sarcastic tone

Gein explains she picked up the guitar, ‘to deal with personal trauma’ but fell in love with the art of songwriting. She describes her style as ‘using Beatlesque melodies, Nirvana guitars riffs and the attitude of Madonna.’

Her goal was to combine grunge and beauty, something she’s achieved here by combining melody with poetic, but relatable lyrics related to mental health, loneliness, and dread.

Listening to her early releases she’s coming on leaps and bounds. Faded To Black and Dreams are raw and lo-fi yet the aforementioned Kiss The Sky has a fuller sound. I’m not sure if it’s intentional but within this there is a psychedelic vibe to it, a nod to fellow Scottish artist, Donavon maybe?

I’d say Frances Gein is one to look out for. I think Mud is her best work so far. It definitely has a swagger and confidence to it which I’m sure with resonate with people. I’d go as far to say it could well be the song in her set which the crowd will be singing back to her as she soaks up the moment.
