Nathan Brown reviews the latest release from Kibou Records. If snotty punk is what you are after, Slime is for you.

Slime were a classic 80s German punk band. This record has nothing whatsoever to do with them. The EP is called Slime and Hazrd Profile fittingly enough features a Fungus The Bogeyman-esque vocal – not that twee TV programme but how he SHOULD have sounded the way Raymond Briggs drew him. Ya get yobby vocals complete with an “I’m so sick of you” “Fuck you” and fake vomiting noises. It’s Snotty punk by numbers. “No vision” they shout…it’s almost “No Future”.

5 songs of general misanthropy and exasperation at society delivered up in 6 and a half minutes. It’s all a bit of a noisy blur. Mid-paced numbers with tin pot drums that could have been lifted from a Riot City 7 inch. Fast little numbers with a thrashy drum attack and the lo-fi appeal of garage.

Just as you think Retro-Turd – a title worthy of note – is going to deliver up a chunky old punk tune they switch. It’s all hammering drums over a repetitive riff, for fans of Heresy, Larm and Seein’ Red. There’s even a slow bass-led breakdown. Occasionally a squealing guitar halfway between Antisect and Johnny Moped drops into a song to liven things up.

Closing the EP, Rubble and Bones intones “None of it fucking matters” over a mid-paced verse before another fast chorus. Despite the nihilistic facade, when you dig a little deeper, you can tell from the lyrics that Hazard Profile really care.

Multi-label release on KIBOU RECORDS (UK) / SANCTUS PROPAGANDA RECORDS (POLAND) / SICK WORLD RECORDS (NEW ZEALAND) / URINAL VINYL RECORDS (UK)
