Hear Gwen Stefani bring back No Doubt’s ska roots in new single

It looks like Gwen Stefani is returning to music roots in her new single “Let Me Reintroduce Myself.”

On Monday, Stefani helped celebrate the debut of her new song by throwing it back 25 years with this classic look from her No Doubt days.

Gwen Stefani is truly bringing back the nostalgia this week. On Monday, the No Doubt frontwoman debuted her new solo single “Let Me Reintroduce Myself.” The track is full of old school ska and reggae sounds reminiscent of No Doubt’s early days.

“This song is a way of saying I’m back with new music,” she says. “It’s a fun, lighthearted song, because I got inspired and hopefully to bring a little bit of joy. The idea was to write a song that had a bit of a nostalgic feeling to it, so I think musically it reminds you of back in the day, going back to where I started musically which was with ska and reggae. I’m still the same me but here’s something a little bit new in case you feel like hearing a little bit more of me.”

“Let Me Reintroduce Myself” features plenty of nods from throughout Stefani’s career you may be familiar with. Early on in the song, Stefani references her mega-hit “Hollaback Girl” with the lyrics, “And it tastes great, I already gave you bananas.”

As well, Stefani debuted an entertaining new lyric video for “Let Me Reintroduce Myself.” Despite her experimentation in other music genres over the years, Stefani brought back her iconic “Just A Girl” look for the video. The No Doubt-era look is a further reminder to her listeners that Stefani is still the same artist they were first introduced to in the ’90s.

Stefani recently sat down with Apple Music‘s Zane Lowe to further talk about her new music. She tells Lowe that she never expected to write any new solo music. However, when the coronavirus lockdown happened, the shocking turn of events eventually led her to the studio.

“Like everybody else, but it was a shock [lockdown] for me,” she says. “I hadn’t done that [being at home] in a long time. But then, at that point, I got to go in and record a song. And that was just a flame to the fire. I just was like, ‘I don’t even care if nobody hears this, I got to write some songs.’ So it was almost like I didn’t have anything to say. I didn’t think until I started writing.”

She further tells Lowe that she has 20 new songs in the works, something she never expected to happen in 2020.

“Even though the record definitely… I don’t know. I mean, I say, ‘The record,’ meaning I have probably 20 songs,” she says. “And I never expected to be writing, but it was in there. And it’s been really, really incredible. I mean, there’s just nothing else that I do in my life, and I have done so many things, that makes me feel ignited the way a new song makes me feel.”

Stefani’s new single “Let Me Reintroduce Myself” arrives just weeks after she announced her engagement to longtime boyfriend Blake Shelton. The couple has collaborated on various songs over the years.

More recently, their song “Nobody But You” hit No.1 on the Billboard Country Airplay chart. They’ve also worked together on “Happy Anywhere,” “You Make It Feel Like Christmas” and “Go Ahead and Break My Heart,” which appears on Shelton’s 2016 album If I’m Honest.
