Here’s the real story behind that Cro-Mags shirt in ‘Wonder Woman 1984’

On Christmas Day, DC fans were treated to the highly-anticipated new film Wonder Woman 1984. Although the film’s simultaneous release on HBO Max and in theaters has sparked various opinions, it looks like one particular detail in the film really has hardcore punk music fans talking.

Eagle-eyed Cro-Mags fans noticed one punk character rocking a The Age of Quarrel shirt in the movie, causing many viewers to point out the shirt’s historical inaccuracy. However, frontman John Joseph has finally clarified how the shirt ended up in Wonder Woman 1984. As well, more importantly, he has also revealed why the shirt’s appearance isn’t historically inaccurate after all.

The new Wonder Woman film is, obviously, set in 1984 in Washington, D.C. In one particular scene, a group of punk music fans can be seen walking in the background. One of the individuals is wearing a Cro-Mags shirt that features the Age Of Quarrel artwork.

The inclusion of the Age Of Quarrel shirt quickly sparked outrage amongst Cro-Mags fans seeing as the album wasn’t officially released until 1986. The apparent historical inaccuracy led to a slew of tweets this week.

Now, John Joseph is finally putting an end to this ongoing Wonder Woman debate. This week, he revealed that various people have contacted him about the apparent inaccuracy. However, it turns out the inclusion of the Cro-Mags shirt in Wonder Woman 1984 wasn’t a mistake after all.

Joseph reveals that he is actually a good friend of the film’s director Patty Jenkins. He was the one who sent her the Age Of Quarrel shirt that eventually ended up in the film. As it turns out, the original album was actually recorded in 1984. Therefore, the shirt’s appearance isn’t really historically inaccurate.

“Had about twenty people tell me about this,” Joseph says. “Patty Jenkins Director/Writer (Monster – Wonder Woman etc.) is a good friend since the 80’s – she asked me to send her a Cro-Mag shirt for the new ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ released today. I sent her this ‘Age of Quarrel’ tee-shirt. The original album (black cassette) was recorded in 1984. Me and Parris (guitarist) paid for the recording. His father owned a pressing plant in Nashville and pressed up the tapes. Here’s some trivia too. – I got Patty her first directing gig. It was for the band Leeway – Three Wishes video. She went to film school in NYC but grew up in DC – is a huge @badbrainsofficial fan too! #wonderwoman1984″

Even though Wonder Woman 1984 was released in theaters and on HBO Max on Dec. 25, its opening day went surprisingly well. The DC film officially had the best opening day than any other film amid the coronavirus pandemic.

According to Complex, the film grossed $16.7 million domestically from 2,100 North American theaters. As well, it brought in $85 million worldwide and almost half of HBO Max’s 12.6 million active subscribers watched the film on Friday, Dec. 25.

Due to the film’s success, Warner Bros. has confirmed they are fast-tracking Wonder Woman 3. Variety reports that the third installment of the franchise is already in the works. Gal Gadot will be back as Wonder Woman while Jenkins is set to direct the next film.

Wonder Woman 1984 is just one of many Warner Bros. films heading to both HBO Max and theaters over the next few months. Dune, The Suicide Squad and The Conjuring 3 are among the Warner Bros. films getting dual releases in 2021.
