Here’s what happened when Nirvana once prank called Gene Simmons

Back in 1994, Kiss My Ass: Classic Kiss Regrooved, a KISS tribute album, was released. The LP features numerous artists such as Anthrax, Lenny Kravitz and Garth Brooks among others. It turns out that Gene Simmons asked Nirvana to be part of the tribute album.

However, all he ended up getting was a prank phone call.

Over the years, numerous stories and unseen photographs from Nirvana’s run in the ’90s have emerged. Last year, a former rock promoter revealed how Nirvana ended up playing football against Chippendales strippers during their 1991 tour. As well, in December, fans got a rare look at Nirvana’s early days when photos from one of their first-ever U.K. shows were rediscovered.

Now, another entertaining story about Kurt Cobian, Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic has come about. While recording In Utero, Nirvana heard from Gene Simmons who asked the band to be part of that KISS tribute album. According to In Utero‘s producer Steve Albini, the band weren’t too keen on the idea. As a result, Nirvana coerced Albini into prank calling Simmons.

“They didn’t want to do it,” Albini tells the whatever, nevermind podcast. “But they didn’t particularly want to talk to Gene Simmons so they had me call and pretend to be Kurt. That was pretty funny. Basically, I sort of bumbled through an excuse that would allow them to not do it without having to say they didn’t want to be on a KISS tribute record. They were very fun-loving people. I enjoyed that session, they were fun to hang around with.”

This latest story about Nirvana arrives shortly after Grohl got candid about his time in the band. In a new interview with Classic Rock, Grohl recalls how he spent his days with Cobain and Novoselic when he joined the band.

“When I first joined the band it was so much fun,” he recalls. “I lived on the couch in Kurt’s living room, we rehearsed in a barn, we set up our gear and played those songs and people bounced around and got hot and sweaty. I really loved the connection and the appreciation that Nirvana’s audience had with the band.”

These days, Grohl finds himself having vivid dreams about performing onstage with Nirvana again. In particular, he dreams about the trio waiting to play for an empty area. For Grohl, these dreams are a reminder of the time that has passed and the music Cobain created before his death.

“I still have dreams that we’re in Nirvana, that we’re still a band,” he says. “I still dream there’s any empty arena waiting for us to play. But I don’t sit down at home and run through “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by myself. It’s just a reminder that the person who is responsible for those beautiful songs is no longer with us. It’s bittersweet.”

Grohl also recently revealed why fans shouldn’t expect him to ever sing a Nirvana song.
