Here’s why Miley Cyrus thinks Cher calling her out was a good thing

It’s been almost a month since Miley Cyrus released her rock-inspired album Plastic Hearts. The LP includes collaborations with Steve Nicks, Dua Lipa, Billy Idol and even Joan Jett.

Now, Cyrus has opened up to collaborator Billy Idol about those comments she received from Cher following her infamous 2013 MTV Video Music Awards performance.

Miley Cyrus has truly been showing her rock side in 2020. Over the course of the year, she has covered some iconic rock artists including Blondie, the Cranberries and Pink Floyd. More recently, she performed an emotional cover of Hole‘s “Doll Parts” which earned a response from Courtney Love herself. As well, she is even working on a Metallica covers album.

Now, Cyrus is opening up more about Plastic Hearts and her evolution into rock music with collaborator Billy Idol. The former Disney star is one of Idol’s guests for his upcoming Live Transmission Christmas Show on Sirius XM. This week, fans got a sneak peek via Just Jared of the holiday special, which airs on Dec. 22.

During the interview, Cyrus recalls the time she was called out by Cher following her infamous MTV Video Music Awards performance with Robin Thicke. After her appearance at the awards show, Cher didn’t have a whole lot of good things to say.

“I’m not old-fashioned,” Cher told USA Today. “She could have come out naked, and if she’d just rocked the house, I would have said, ‘You go, girl.’ It just wasn’t done well. She can’t dance, her body looked like hell, the song wasn’t great, one cheek was hanging out. And, chick, don’t stick out your tongue if it’s coated. If you’re going to go that far, then think about it before you do it.”

Cher later shared a few tweets regretting her choice of words. In the Twitter posts, Cher said she should’ve supported a fellow artist and that Cyrus is really talented.

During her chat with Billy Idol, Cyrus says she’s managed to turn the criticism into something positive over the years.

“I had Cher come after me on Twitter… that’s when I thought I had really made it,” Cyrus says. “I’m like, ‘Oh, Cher gives a fuck about what I’m doing. She was mad that I was sticking my tongue out all the time, and all that shit. And I’m like, ‘Yo, I pissed Cher off, I really made it!’ That’s what I mean, when these legends, and these icons, and these artists that we look up to — when they, y’know… fucking hate us, it’s still a compliment.”

Billy Idol’s full conversation with Miley Cyrus airs on Tuesday, Dec. 22 at 8 P.M. ET/5 P.M. PT.

Cyrus and Idol also got together for an episode of YouTube‘s RELEASED series. During the interview, Cyrus opens up on how Joan Jett helped revolutionize rock music for women. As well, she reveals why losing her Malibu home in a wildfire was a sign she needed to restart what eventually became Plastic Hearts.
