Idle Noise channel bad relationships into good music on gentle but jaunty new single. Sam Lambeth reviews.

There are times during Idle Noise’s new single where you feel quite uncomfortable. Namely, the lyrics are so raw and lacerating that it feels like you have accidentally stumbled into the teenage dwelling of a recently dumped boy frantically recording voice notes.

But then again, isn’t that the point? Love isn’t always going to be romantic walks in the park and, in the case of most Love Island winners, a Range Rover and a sponsored deal with Missguided. Love can be ugly, but to Idle Noise’s credit, they’ve made the bitterness, the rage, the regret, all sound damn beautiful.

“Punch me, kick me, hold me, I don’t care as long as I’m worthy of all your love,” they wail during the heartfelt chorus, and while you feel that whoever is toying with this singer’s heart needs a good punch in the reproductive region – and he needs a bloody good night out – it’s hard not to get a little emotional.

Indeed, Idle Noise singer Ben Brandist should be applauded. Not many people would wear their heart and their disappointment so bravely on their sleeves. Here is a man beaten down by a former love to the point where he’s probably wearing his ex’s clothes and crying into a vat of caramel.

Musically, All Your Love has the charm and grace of a veranda overlooking a country sunset, or an Italian city bustling with hope and ambition. Acoustic guitars chime jauntily like an unplugged Kooks, while the nimble and melodic guitar solo bops pleasantly and precisely.

“I wish it had never happened,” Brandist cries at the start. We call bullshit. You got this song out of it, Ben. And so did we. You should be wishing it happened all over again just for another cracking slither of heartbreak like this. Sublime.
