Alt-pop singer and actor Kat Cunning released “Confident” as their first song of 2021 along with a new video for the track. “Confident” is the first music from Cunning since the acoustic version of “King Of Shadow” in December.

The new dark and moody video sees them dancing in a smoky room with an entourage. Going back to their dance roots, Cunning was heavily influenced by Janet Jackson for the “Confident” video choreography.

After dancing for most of their life, around five years ago Cunning sang for the first time in a performance for their dance company. Soon after, they started writing music and now sing professionally.

Cunning shared their first music in 2017 with “Baby” before releasing many fan-favorite singles such as “King Of Shadow,” “For The Love and Birds.” In 2018, they toured the country for the first time in support of singer LP.

After beginning their acting career on Broadway, the singer later appeared in seasons 2 and 3 of HBO’s The Deuce. Cunning also recently starred in the Emmy award-winning Netflix show Trinkets as singer Sabine who was also the love interest for the lead, Elodie (Brianna Hildebrand). They have performed many of their songs during the show’s two seasons, including “Birds,” “King Of Shadow” and “Supernova (tigers blud).”

After releasing their single “Supernova (tigers blud)” in 2020, Cunning brought Lynn Gunn of PVRIS in to make a remix of the track. The two first met through a mutual friend and later decided Gunn would be perfect at reimagining the song. Gunn exclusively told Alternative Press that she wanted to bring a darker, ’80s sound to the track.

Now gearing up for the release of “Confident,” Cunning first teased the song on social media earlier this week.

Ahead of the release, they responded to messages from fans about a possible FLETCHER collab, how much they love food and more in a pandemic-friendly Q&A video.

“I know you’re famous, and won’t see this probably,” one fan writes, “But you’re so strong and your songs make me feel like someone understands some of the things I’m going through, thank you.”

Cunning says messages like this make them feel really good. “I try when I sing my songs to be vulnerable and brave about stuff that’s been hard for me to go through,” they say. “It means a lot that comes across and that the music can be a friend to people who are going through things.”

Looking forward to what the future has in store, Cunning will be also starring in the upcoming Jennifer Lopez film Marry Me. You can listen to “Confident” now here and watch the music video below.

Kat Cunning “Confident” lyrics

You told me
you’d be there at 8
And by ten
You told me not to wait

But its almost 11 now
Why you actin’ out
Why you actin’ out

I don’t have time for your shit
My egos too big
And I know I can be fragile

But I made you my pride
Put you up in the sky
So call me when you come down

To tell me if you’re
Confi-confident
That you can hold me
You so omi-ominous
You need to tell me
Are you on the-on the fence
You need to tell me are you confident

Yeah, do you
Know what, what you have
I give you diamonds when
She gave you, gave you half
You play too much girl it is
Common, common sense
You need to tell me are you confident?

I told you
You were my everything
And you said
That you would wear my name
But I’m not tryin’
To spell it out for you

You swear that you want it
You want it all
So tell me why I’m waiting for your call back
You know I’m not tryin’ to simp
But girl if you leave me then you’ll be a blip
On my map
