Listen! Rich Ragany & The Digressions release new single Marionette

Rich Ragany & the Digressions have today released Marionette, the first single from their new album Beyond Nostalgia And Heartache, due out in April.

The power pop rockers have shone a light through the gloom of lockdown with a storming call to arms of a single and the promise of more to come on their new album.

Rich Ragany talked about the song’s background: “Marionette was written with a friend of mine, Olivia Airey, in mind. She is an amazing musician who right now is in a band out of Berlin called Maggot Heart, one of the most unique hard rock heavy metal bands I’ve heard in a long time. Olivia used to work at the Cro Bar in London and we were very close friends – we used to be in a band called DEADBEAT together. Despite being such an amazing musician she had a time when she was going through a crisis of faith and I saw her step up to the challenge and change things in her life. I was struck by what an inspiring example she set – to get up off your arse and pursue your thoughts and dreams – so I thought I would dedicate this song to her.”

With a planned tour with Status Quo kiboshed by Covid-19, the band have instead focused their pent-up energies on writing and recording separately from their homes, with one album due for release next month and a further album already in the mix.

“Marionette was put together in lockdown – I had written the song and I had the lyrics ready for the verses and the chorus, but the chorus sounded very different. I sent it off to Gaff (guitarist) and he said we needed to make the chorus more chanty, more immediate – so this is a co-write between me and Gaff. He came up with that line “Do ya feel, Feel like ya wanna feel” and I ended it with the “They steal what they wanna steal”. And that’s the best part of a collaboration. The worst part is thinking you’ve written a great song and being really happy with this, and then Gaff says “nope!” and having to go back to the drawing board, back to the bathroom – got to keep the band happy!”

Beyond Nostalgia And Heartache is the much anticipated follow up to the band’s debut album Like We’ll Never Make It and, judging by Marionette, promises to be just as strong.

“We picked this song because it’s got a great energy to it to kick off the album, and it gives a little hint as to what’s going to come for the rest of the album. It’s a very varied album in sound and scope and it’s quite cinematic, and this is a really good energetic way to kick everything off.”
