Miley Cyrus gave a passionate performance at the opening of the new Resorts World venue in Las Vegas, singing original songs and covers, including Cocteau Twins“Heaven Or Las Vegas.”

Decked out in a patriotic outfit with an American flag miniskirt and starry boots, Cyrus had a stacked setlist for her Fourth of July performance.

Though she nodded to her 2020 rock album, Plastic Hearts, by performing the title song, Cyrus mainly looked to her past. “The Climb” and “Party In The U.S.A.” were just some of her older songs on the setlist.

While introducing “Heaven Or Las Vegas” toward the end of her set, Cyrus joked with the crowd. Joking about how people want her to play her original songs and not covers anymore, she mentioned that “Jolene” was still requested.

“I know everybody like myself has been locked up in lockdown, and we just want to have a fucking good-ass time tonight,” she began. “I’m going to do a classic Miley…I am going to sing a song no one fucking knows, but you will know it after tonight. And I’ve seen the tweets: ‘Stop doing covers,’ but yet somehow ‘Jolene’ was requested. So, one for me. This song is called ‘Heaven Or Las Vegas,’ for obvious reasons. Category is: Vegas.”

Cyrus’ cover put her soaring vocals front and center. She performed a shortened version, assuring the crowd that it was only going to be a minute long and they could get back to songs they actually knew soon.

She even joked around with some fans in the crowd, lightheartedly calling them out for attempting to sing the lyrics without knowing the song.

“You’re kinda pretending like you know it, which I love,” she told them.

Cocteau Twins took to Facebook to applaud Cyrus’ performance, captioning the post “Surprise, surprise!”

To wrap up the night, Cyrus sang her 2009 hit “Party In The U.S.A,” with some notable differences.

“And now I’m gonna play the song that paid for these boots, honey,” she said at the beginning of the song. “I’m not joking about that, either.”

The pre-chorus of the famous song includes the lyrics “That’s when the taxi man turned on the radio/And a Jay-Z song was on.” However, Cyrus changed the lyrics to shout out Britney Spears and the #FreeBritney movement. “That’s when the taxi man turned on the radio,” she sang, “He turned to me and said ‘Free Britney.’”

Cyrus continued passionately yelling “Free Britney” in the second pre-chorus, where the original lyric actually does mention Spears. She also added that she meant no harm to Jay-Z, just that Spears is more important at the moment.

“We love Jay-Z, but we got to free this bitch,” she told the crowd. “It’s stressing me the fuck out!”

This isn’t the first time Cyrus has publicly shown support for her fellow pop star. Earlier this year during her Super Bowl TikTok Tailgate performance of “Party In The U.S.A.,” she shared a similar sentiment. “We love Britney!” she said after the mention of Spears in the song.
