Afternoon People

Every now and again I get a recommendation from a friend that is excited about a fresh sound emerging from the streets of underground Manchester. This one is the best I’ve had for a while from a grass roots venue veteran and promoter, published author and head of MMTV Anton Pell. He’s bang as fuck on the nail here as Afternoon People are destined for big things…

The first time I listened to this tune I thought, fuckin’ ell! Where have they come from? Apparently they formed in 2019 and mithered everyone who would listen to check out their tunes, as us old school ex bands had to do back in the day. Sounds like it’s paid off. Now at the still too young age of 17 (the frontman is fuckin’ 16 from the (now not so) rough streets of Ancoats) they arrive with an excellent track of huge indie proportions. If you think of bands like The Lathums, The Snuts, Dirty Laces et all then you’re on the right track. A blistering indie anthem that takes most bands years of rehearsing in damp Shudehill studios to come up with. First single Sovereign has a sound of ambition that hits you but this track sees them soaring to a level that most bands take years to suss out. Here’s a bit more about them…

The indie-rock quartet formed in September 2019 in the heart of the UK’s music scene, Manchester. The band, who were born and raised in the city have gigged their way around iconic music venues such as Jimmy’s and Manchester Academy. From as early as their first gig in October 2019, the lads performed their own original tracks which were well received by music fans and critics. Their first headline gig was a sell-out and the demand for them to perform around the city has been ever-increasing, amassing a loyal fan base from the get-go. Since then, the four piece have spent time refining their sound and recording new music, their debut single ‘Sovereign’ was released earlier this year. Lockdown has meant the quartet have had time to write, record and prepare for a big return in 2021, releasing more music and supporting The Lathums on their UK tour.

You heard it here first on Louder Than War. These lads are going to be massive.
