Chad Kroeger opens up on the journey of Nickelback

In a recent interview on My Planet Rocks, Nickelback frontman Chad Kroeger looked back on the band’s earlier days and their big breakthroughs. The chat started when he was asked to explain why he chose AC/DC’s “Have a Drink on Me” for the radio show’s playlist.

He explained:

“There’s something about that song that it sends this wave through me every time I hear it. Like if I’m in like a little dive bar or something — or just any bar — all of the sudden, I hear that song come on, I just get this immediate feeling that it’s going to be a long one. It just gives me this sense that I really want to dig in for the night and have a really good time.”

Further on, he was asked whether the band could have ever imagined that they would get as big as they are today. Chad answered:

“I think that everyone’s journey through this style of life is incredibly different. When I’m looking up on stage and I’m picturing James Hetfield, or I’m picturing the guys of Mötley Crüe, or [Axl Rose and] Guns N’ Roses or anything like that, that I’m thinking what’s it like? What are their parties like? [laughs] What’s that lifestyle like? You know, that rock star lifestyle.

“It really is different for everyone. And it’s what you make it. And you go through all the different stages of it and you say ‘Okay, at one point in time, I was definitely in my party phase.’ [laughs] Every night burning the candle at both ends.

“I have no idea how I could drink until eight o’clock in the morning and then still be able to sing during soundcheck at four o’clock in the afternoon and then put on a show. It’s crazy. But standing on stage and then looking back out of the audience is a whole different… [laughs] Because now suddenly, that’s you doing that. It’s your job to entertain those people. And you can’t miss a beat.”
