I don’t know if I’d ever find her name by Googling, but however I came across her story in the late 1980s. I used it as an example of a not particularly political person who was compelled to move to Washington, D.C., to engage in popular protest. Not a Gloria Steinem or an Angela Davis, whose activist lives seem to flow on an elevated level that was quite unfathomable, this woman came quintessentially out of nowhere on a trajectory that seemed plausible in a regular person’s existence. That’s what made it so exciting to me. Her story was a deftly drawn template for how to become an activist.
