Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 37-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

Somehow, even though club environments were not conducive for much conversation and it was super late by the time we hit the hay, we made a lot of enduring connections with interesting people all over the place. People I still call friends to this day. Many of our great, world-class conversations took place in the morning before we had to get on the road for the next show. If that night’s show was close, then we had more time to visit. There were also many departures before our hosts were out of bed. All those trying to find the coffee-making equipment while trying not to make too much noise mornings in a near-stranger’s kitchen.
