Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 37-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

I almost gave up on creating “text” for this illustration. It seems complete, and I don’t have anything else to add, but the truth is … it bugs me in a couple of ways. 1) I haven’t had a hug since well before COVID started. 2) I kinda wanna punch this guy being soothed and coddled by the woman. I think we should be doing more than we thought we could. More than we expect of ourselves. Fuck this guy leaning on a woman to console him. Fuck his “I can’t” attitude. Get me this guy’s contact info! Pretty sure I wrote a song about him in about 1984.

Strong White Male
I want to go beyond the weather
or not all
I dig myself in deeper
and you want to know why I talk this way
this way
Strong white male
here’s a world for you
and most of us are the ones to lose
Your talk is in the sun and rain
and mine is in the want and hate
Strong white male
here’s a world for you
and most of us are the ones to lose
