Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 37-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

“Remember,” David said in a recent radio interview about Benjamin Lay, the subject of his new graphic novel, “he lived in a time when slavery was legal, but he still fought against it. Can you imagine the strength that it took to do that? The empathy he had, the stamina, the integrity in the fight against these cruelties and injustice that he witnessed in the world? So these are all key qualities that activists, if they want to have longevity as activists … well, he shows the way. You don’t give up. You have to be determined. These are all in the book. It’s a book about a humble person who lived a life of deep compassion and human decency, which in today’s world is truly something to strive for.”
