Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 39-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

Over on Facebook, I posted the link to the video Kathleen Hanna made, in which she outlined how she first heard Mecca Normal, and how our objectives resonated with her. She also mentioned the importance of our song “I Walk Alone.

A friend commented that it was good to see a musician giving credit to their influences.

I replied, saying that I’d been thinking along the same lines, adding, “Because there is an overarching activist component in what both Bikini Kill and Mecca Normal do, making positive associations and being supportive of like-minded artists is elementary to broadening awareness of issues at hand.”
