Every week, we’ll be posting a new illustration by David Lester. The Mecca Normal guitarist is visually documenting people, places and events from his band’s 40-year run, with text by vocalist Jean Smith.

First, there’s the literal phase, based in outrage and the urge to share it. Some time later, there’s the I questioned it, figured some things out, and now I’m gonna ask you (implying that you haven’t figured out what I figured out) phase.

The next phase involves consciously not writing lyrics or song titles with question marks.

Mass incarceration doesn’t keep people safe. Public safety is enhanced by things like higher wages and improved graduation rates.
