Paramore are harnessing the world’s social and political chaos as inspiration for their latest single, “The News.” The track is the second offering from their new album, This Is Why, which arrives Feb. 10 via Atlantic.

With the new single, the band deviate from the psych-pop sound that colored their previous single, “This Is Why.” Instead, Paramore reach back and touch their roots, serving up a nimble and frenetic song that will kill live.

“The News” is accompanied by a video akin to a horror movie, directed by Mike Kluge and Matthew DeLisi. In the visual, Hayley Williams stares into the camera with dead eyes, mirroring the way doomscrolling and an endless flood of information can make people feel numb.

“[‘The News’] feels like a happy medium between classic Paramore angst and bringing in some influences we’ve always had but never exploited,” Williams explains in a press release. “Watching Zac [Farro] track drums for this one was one of my favorite memories from the studio. Lyrically, it probably explains itself. The 24-hour news cycle is just impossible to comprehend. And I feel a pang of guilt when I unplug to protect my headspace. The common reaction, or non-reaction, seems to be dissociation. Not one of us is innocent of that, and who could blame us?”

While the end of the year nears, Paramore have kept plenty busy. In September, they unveiled the album’s title track and video (directed by Turnstile’s Brendan Yates), which makes the band sound massive. On top of headlining the inaugural When We Were Young Festival, they recently completed a small run of intimate shows as well.

Next year, Paramore will embark on their North America headliner, with Bloc Party, Foals, Genesis Owusu and the Linda Lindas supporting. They’ll also appear on the opening date of Taylor Swift’s Eras tour.
