Welcome to Sound Station, where we’re highlighting the best new tracks that came out this week. Head into the weekend with songs from Pretty Sick, Zach Tabori and more.

Pretty Sick’s “Black Tar” meditates on claustrophobic relationships

Ahead of their forthcoming debut album, Makes Me Sick Makes Me SmilePretty Sick have unveiled their softer side with their latest single. On “Black Tar,” vocalist Sabrina Fuentes recounts an asphyxiating relationship over a foreboding, wistful instrumental. Its accompanying video reveals the heavy toll of someone paralyzed by fear and doubt. Check it out below.

Zach Tabori’s “Alligator” is LA mayhem

Imagine if Frank Zappa donned an alligator mask and romped around LA causing mayhem. Then turn your attention to the chaotic visual for “Alligator,” which needs to be seen to be believed. Turkish multi-instrumentalist Zach Tabori unleashes a hard-chugging nod to his love for rock ’n’ roll as the titular alligator self-destructs. Along the way, he harasses employees at Cindy’s Diner, eats laundry and robs a convenience store. How’s your Friday?

Nick Hakim’s grainy hypnotism

Nick Hakim is the romantic type. On “Happen,” the psych-soul crooner appreciates the quieter moments, like watching the sunlight brush against your partner’s skin. Sonically, the track is slow-boiling and intimate, with piano flourishes from Alex G and Abe Rounds on drums to round out Hakim’s hazy vocals. COMETA, a collection of love songs, is out Oct. 21 via ATO Records. Listen below.

notfortheo are beach bums on “just a little bit”

Remember the days when Washed Out’s “Feel It All Around” felt ubiquitous and inescapable? Now, notfortheo are ushering in the next generation of chillwave. In the lo-fi visual, the Toronto trio rollick around on a tropical beach, soundtracked by a buoyant groove. You can almost feel the humidity and haze in the video below.

THICK create exuberant punk

THICK’s “Happiness” is spiked with plenty of ’90s nostalgia. “This song explores the ways we seek validation and how it motivates the way we interact with the world around us,” THICK say. “Whether you look for it externally or internally, it begs the question, ‘Who is this all for, and is it ever enough?’” Their new album, Happy Now, is out today via Epitaph. Also, peep that killer cover art.

Field Medic’s unfiltered folk

Field Medic (aka singer-songwriter Kevin Patrick Sullivan) is back with his latest track “i think about you all the time,” a two-minute slice of well-meaning folk. The track is a lesson in contrast. Bright instrumentals and upbeat vocals contradict its dark meaning, with Sullivan saying he was struggling with his sobriety at the time of writing. grow your hair long if you’re wanting to see something that you can change is out Oct. 14 via Run For Cover.
