What is pop punk without its guitarists? Really just some angsty spoken word over punchy drums and a bassline. Let’s be honest: We’d still probably listen to it, but it wouldn’t be nearly as good. 

We may like to focus on vocals and lyrics when it comes to channeling our 2000s nostalgia. However, the guitarists had some significant influence on our favorite bands—and therefore us as well.

More on Tom DeLonge

Tom DeLonge’s foundations in pop-punk go back to the ’90s with the formation of blink-182, where he served as a guitarist and vocalist. Though active for most of the decade, the band made their big break in 1999 with their third studio album, Enema Of The State. They would go on to record and release three more studio albums prior to DeLonge’s most recent departure.

The term “most recent” is an important distinction. DeLonge had formerly quit the band in 2005, a couple of years after the release of their hit Untitled record. Without a replacement for their guitarist, the band went on a hiatus. During this time, DeLonge founded his current outfit, Angels & Airwaves. Their debut album, We Don’t Need To Whisper, was released in 2006.

The founding trio of blink-182 reunited again in 2009 to write and record their 2011 album, Neighborhoods. During this time, DeLonge continued work with Angels & Airwaves, releasing both records that now comprise Love, Pt. 1 & 2. DeLonge stepped back from blink-182 again to pursue other projects in 2015. The split came shortly before the production of their seventh album, California. Alkaline Trio’s Matt Skiba has since filled his role as the band’s guitarist.

DeLonge dropped his first solo album, To The Stars… Demos, Odds And Ends, later that year. Since then, he’s worked on a variety of projects, including two Angels & Airwaves EPs and an EDM collaboration with Illenium. He’s currently in the process of making his directorial debut with a paranormal adventure film titled Monsters Of California.
