Leeds’ sextet Talkboy release their EP Wrapped In Blue, a collection that combines lo-fi indie pop with dashes of drama.

On their new EP, Leeds’ Talkboy have melded breezy lo-fi to the kitchen-sink type drama that populated the likes of Divine Comedy and David Devant to create a wonderful collection of five songs that drift along and wind their way into your conscious, blissfully unaware of the effect until you find yourself switched off to the outside world. The opening song, Stupid Luck, mixes the intuitive sweet angst of Belle and Sebastian with the wistfulness of First Aid Kit. It’s in those moments here where the band really shine.

What The Moon Was Like and Like A Lover Should follow in a similar vein, the latter with entwining male-female vocals over a single acoustic guitar plucked sweetly beneath recalling the northern drama of bands like Tompaulin. The combination is affecting as it wisps along. But there is another side to the band that they bring to the fore on a couple of songs here.

Sky Is Falling, premiered here last year, picks up the pace with an infectious guitar line over a more urgent rhythm. Here the band are channelling the space between The Strokes and The Chills. A quick crunching riff juts out before the band head into a floating middle eight and outro. The title track sits somewhere between the two, woozy tremolo sitting back in the mix over which they craft a great song, like a lost Neil Hannon or Richard Hawley track.

Talkboy are a band on the rise and definitely ones to watch. On this EP they have brought together the sensibilities that have imbued some of the great indie-pop bands through the years and show incredible promise. On the basis of this EP, their full-length debut album, when it arrives, will be a real treat.

Wrapped In Blue is available on pre-order here.
