The postponed 2021 Grammys clash with the Screen Actors Guild Awards

After various reports, the Recording Academy has officially postponed the 2021 Grammys as COVID-19 cases continue to surge.

However, it looks like the now rescheduled Grammy Awards are facing a major scheduling conflict. The prestigious music awards are now happening on the same day as the Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG).

The 2021 Grammys, which were set to happen on Jan. 31, have officially be rescheduled to Mar. 14. The Recording Academy made the tough decision to move the event as coronavirus cases continue to surge in the United States.

After thoughtful conversations with health experts, our host and artists scheduled to appear, we are rescheduling the 63rd #GRAMMYs to be broadcast Sunday, March 14, 2021.

In particular, California, where the 2021 Grammys is set to happen, is one of the states seeing the largest uptick in COVID-19 cases. According to the Los Angeles Times, the state set a single-day record of 74,000 new cases on Jan. 4th. The latest surge is likely due to large gatherings and travel over the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays.

However, it looks like the SAG Awards and Grammys are going to be fighting for viewers’ attention on Mar. 14. Both awards shows are now set to happen on the same day despite the fact the SAG Awards announced their broadcast more than six months ago.

According to a new statement, the guild is deeply disappointed in the Recording Academy’s decision.

“We are extremely disappointed to hear of the conflicting date, March 14th, announced today for this year’s Grammy Awards telecast,” the statement says. “[We] announced the same date for the SAG Awards last July with the intent to give the greatest possible scheduling consideration for other awards shows. We expect the same consideration from sister organizations throughout the industry.”

This latest scheduling conflict isn’t new to the SAG Awards or the Grammys. Last year, the 26th Annual SAG Awards were originally scheduled for Jan. 26, 2020. However, when the Grammys were announced for the same date, the SAG Awards were moved up to Jan. 19.

Back in November, the Recording Academy announced the official nominees for this year’s Grammys. Beyonce is the leader of the pack with a total of nine nominations. Meanwhile, Dua Lipa, Taylor Swift and Roddy Ricch trail behind with six nominations each.

The Grammys received some criticism after the nominations were announced. Halsey, the Weeknd and Nicki Minaj are a few of the artists to speak publicly about the corruption and industry bias that goes into the nomination selections.

Power Trip and Body Count are among the artists nominated in this year’s Best Metal Performance category. Ice-T recently revealed why he would still feel like he won if Power Trip took home the award over Body Count.
