It looks like the Star Wars and Green Dayfandoms have crossed paths in an unusual way this week.
As it turns out, before trailblazing their way into the Stars Wars franchise, one actor was actually in a ska band that once opened for the American Idiot trio.
However, long before he was battling it out on-screen alongside Chewbacca, Isaac was rocking out with his ska band. Back in the 1990s, Isaac played in a band known as The Blinking Underdogs. As it turns out, the band ended up opening for some big names including Green Day and the Mighty Mighty Bosstones. In fact, Isaac previously opened up about his past career in ska music to Jimmy Kimmel.
“I was in a few ska bands actually,” he said. “There were a few. Petrified Frogs. Closet Heterosexuals. The Worms and then The Blinking Underdogs, as well…We played on a stage at a festival about five hours before [The Mighty, Mighty Bosstones], but that was a great thing to have on your resume.”
Now, it looks like a rare photo of the Blinking Underdogs has re-emerged and the internet has a lot of thoughts. This week, Twitter user @handsome_pa shared the throwback photo that has truly captured everyone’s attention. Isaac (in the bandana) can be seen standing alongside his former bandmates.
“Still thinking about Oscar Isaac’s ska band that opened for Green Day and The Mighty Mighty Bosstones in the late 90s.”

The Blinking Underdogs ended up disbanding after Isaac decided to pursue acting. He went on to graduate from the prestigious Juilliard and star in films including Ex Machina, Sucker Punch and 2021’s Dune. Earlier this month, we learned that Dune is just one of the Warner Bros. titles simultaneously premiering in cinemas and on HBO Max in 2021.
A video of Oscar Isaac performing with the Blinking Underdogs can be watch below. As well, all of his Star Wars films are currently streaming on Disney+.
