Following on from their first two singles, duo Tommy Lefroy release their new EP Flight Risk out.

The EP opens with the title track, immediately bringing in the ethereal dual vocals of Tessa Mouzourakis and Wynter Bethel. They glide effortlessly over a very subtle organ and sparse singular drum beats, purposefully placed low in the mix to give protagonism to the interplay of their voices. From there they drift into one of their previous singles, The Cause, which aligns them clearly with the same style as singers such as Pheobe Bridgers and First Aid Kit, an alt-folk brimming with a gleaming pop production; subtle and yet captivating in the way it draws you into their world.

Shoot follows down the same root, although stripping the music back further to a simple acoustic guitar that again brings their voices to the fore. Mouzourakis and Bethel, based between London and Los Angeles, met as session songwriters at Nashville house parties and their style recalls such lazy, wistful comedowns as dawns break and light cracks through curtains after a long a heady night. Mortals picks up an almost Celtic ballad feel, again effortless in its execution before previous single Vampires returns to Bridgers’ territory. The comparison is easy to hear, but that doesn’t take anything away from the songs themselves that flow with ease and comfort darkening evenings that bite each night more with an icy chill.

The duo are slowly stretching their songwriting and the move to this EP shows promise for them to expand their ideas to a full album. They are riding a wave of their chosen style and time will tell if they can stay afloat after the swell subsides, but this collection shows that they certainly have the potential.
