For all of the movie buffs out there, the time has finally arrived. On Monday, the Oscars unveiled the nominations for its 2021 awards show. Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra had the honor of announcing this year’s Academy Award nominees during a virtual ceremony.

Netflix‘s Mank leads the pack this year with a staggering 10 nominations. Meanwhile, Chadwick Boseman has earned a posthumous Actor In A Leading Role nomination for his part in Netflix‘s Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. Nine Inch NailsTrent Reznor and Atticus Ross are also nominated this year. The duo is up for Original Score for their work on both Mank and Disney and Pixar‘s Soul.

The 2021 nominations list is also historic in a few different ways. For the first time ever, two female directors, Chloé Zhao for Nomadland and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman, are nominated together in the Directing category. Zhao is also the first woman of color to be nominated for this particular award.

As well, according to CNN, the Academy states 70 women received a total of 76 nominations across all of the categories, which is a historic record for the awards show.

Both Reznor and Ross are already having a great awards season. Last month, the duo and Jon Batiste walked away with the Best Original Score – Motion Picture award at the Golden Globes for Soul. Reznor and Ross were also nominated in that same category for Mank. On March 7, Reznor, Ross and Batiste were also among the winners at the Critics Choice Awards when they won the Best Orginal Score award for Soul.

Now, Reznor and Ross are double nominees at the 2021 Oscars. Spike Lee‘s Da 5 Bloods, Minari and News Of The World are the other scores being recognized by the Oscars this year.

Reznor and Ross have quite a history with the Oscars. Back in 2011, their score for The Social Network earned them their first nomination at the Academy Awards. Eventually, the Nine Inch Nails members won the Original Score category over 127 Hours, How To Train Your Dragon, Inception and The King’s Speech.

Their scores for Mank and Soul are available to stream below.

Over the years, Reznor has appeared on eight different Alternative Press covers. He was first on the front of AP with Nine Inch Nails back in 1990. Since Issue #31, he has been on various other covers and holds the record for the second-most AP cover appearances. Currently, Andy Black of Black Veil Brides holds the record for most covers.

Similar to Reznor and Ross, Boseman has also already won a few prestigious awards this year. Back in August, Boseman tragically died at the age of 43 after a long battle with colon cancer. However, while battling the disease, the actor filmed various projects including Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom which is based on an August Wilson play.

At the Golden Globes, Boseman was awarded Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his portrayal of Levee in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. He also won Best Actor at the Critics Choice Awards earlier this month. Boseman’s wife Taylor Simone Ledward accepted both of the awards on his behalf.

Now, Boseman has officially been nominated for Actor In A Leading Role at the Oscars. This marks his first-ever Oscar nomination. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is the last project Boseman filmed before his death. However, Marvel fans haven’t seen the last of the Black Panther star just yet. Boseman appears as both T’Challa and Star-Lord in the new Disney+ series What If…?.

Boseman is up against Anthony Hopkins, Riz Ahmed, Steven Yeun and Gary Oldman for the coveted Actor In A Leading Role award. Both Ahmed and Yeun have made history with their nominations as this is the first time a Muslim actor and Asian-American actor have been included in the category.

Ahmed is nominated for Amazon Prime Video‘s Sound Of Metal where he plays Ruben, a metal drummer who loses his hearing. As a result, he searches for a way to pay for cochlear implants while being introduced to a new life within the deaf community.

Back in December, Travis Barker took part in an epic Metallica cover for Sound Of Metal. The blink-182 drummer joined Elise TrouwCarey Watkins and American Sign Language performer Paul Raci and they transformed a Metallica classic into the ultimate drum-heavy cover with an unexpected electronic vibe.

Raci‘s part in Sound Of Metal has also earned him an Actor In A Supporting Role nomination at the Oscars. This marks his first-ever nomination at the awards show.

The trailer for Sound Of Metal is below, and the film is streaming now on Amazon Prime Video.

For the first time ever, two female directors are nominated in the Academy Awards’ Directing category. Zhao is nominated for Nomadland while Fennell is up for Promising Young Woman. Zhao is also the first woman of color to be included in this category.

So far, Zhao and Fennell have both been nominated in the directing categories at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards. In the end, Zhao walked away with both of the directing awards. However, Fennell did win Best Screenplay for Promising Young Woman at the Critics Choice Awards.

Zhao’s Nomadland stars Frances McDormand and is available to watch on Hulu. Along with the inclusion in the Directing category, Nomadland snagged five other nominations at the Academy Awards this year.
