Who: Cian Ó Maoláin (God Alone. and Red Sun Alert.) and chums.
What: Post-hardcore with nods to black metal and experimental song structures.
Where: Cork, bai!
Why: Cian Ó Maoláin, who plays a tasty bass for Irish post-metal fellas God Alone., is a dude. UNCULTIVATES is his latest endeavour. The project’s debut EP I’VE LOST COUNT OF THE NUMBER OF TIMES I’VE BEEN SET ON FIRE is an abrasive, exploratory and intense blast of blackened post-hardcore. It arrives fully formed and realised with production that is tastily raw and rugged.
The opening track ‘Dread First’ comes on like Fugazi if their parents were Texans of Norwegian extraction. ‘Rental Snake’ follows up with blast beats and chugs. Chugs and blast beats. Finally, the title track incorporates some saxophone from Ó Maoláin’s God Alone. bandmate Jake O’Driscoll. In short, we dig it.
