It’s been nearly four months since Black Panther star Chadwick Boseman tragically passed away at the age of 43. Although the talented actor died before Black Panther 2 began filming, it looks like his final appearance as T’Challa hasn’t happened yet.

This week, Marvel Studios confirmed where and when Boseman’s final Marvel appearance will air.

Back in August, Chadwick Boseman passed away after a long battle with cancer. Shortly after, speculation emerged that his role as T’Challa in Black Panther may be recast. However, over the past few months, Marvel Studios and Disney remained quiet.

Finally, last month, the companies celebrated what would’ve been Boseman’s 44th birthday with a reworked version of Black Panther‘s opening credits. The touching tribute was a reminder to all that Boseman’s legacy and portrayal in Black Panther will never be forgotten.

Then, a few weeks ago, Marvel Studios head Kevin Feige confirmed that Boseman’s role will not be recast.

“[Boseman’s] portrayal of T’Challa the Black Panther is iconic and transcends any iteration of the character in any other medium from Marvel’s past, and it’s for that reason, that we will not recast the character,” Feige said. “However, to honor the legacy that Chad helped us build, we want to continue to explore the world of Wakanda and all the rich and varied characters introduced in the first film.”

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, production for Black Panther 2 has faced numerous delays. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, filming is now slated to begin sometime in July 2021. Although Boseman died before production began, it looks like his final Black Panther appearance hasn’t happened yet.

Boseman is set to appear as T’Challa in the upcoming Disney+ series What If…?. However, it may not be the final performance fans are hoping for. Since the series is completely animated, Marvel fans won’t be able to see the real Chadwick Boseman on-screen. Despite this, What If….? will mark the final time Boseman’s T’Challa appears in the MCU.

Feige recently revealed to Emmy Magazine that Boseman “came in about four times and recorded numerous episodes.” This latest news means that Boseman’s Black Panther role appears various times throughout the What If…? series.

Earlier this month, Marvel Studios basically broke the internet when it announced the highly-anticipated release dates for its upcoming films and original series. Among the announcements were What If…? which officially arrives on Disney+ sometime next summer.

“‘Space. Time. Reality. It’s more than linear path.’ WHAT IF…?, an Original Series from Marvel Studios, is coming Summer 2021 to #DisneyPlus.”

As for the fate of Black Panther 2, there’s still a lot to be known. Some theorize that Letitia Wright’s Shuri will become the new Black Panther as this storyline is played out in the comics. However, nothing has been confirmed yet. Additionally, Wright received some backlash recently after she seemingly tweeted in support of the anti-vax movement surrounding the COVID-19 vaccines.

Black Panther 2 is scheduled to be released on July 8, 2022 and will be written and directed by Ryan Coogler.
