You probably shouldn’t trust this new character in the ‘Dexter’ reboot

It looks like Dexter Morgan is getting some new company in the upcoming Showtime reboot.

The revival has officially cast its major villain – Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake.

Back in October, we learned that Dexter is officially getting a reboot thanks to Showtime. The 10-episode limited series is reuniting original star Michael C. Hall and showrunner Clyde Phillips.

Now, it looks like Dexter Morgan is about to meet his match in the upcoming Showtime reboot. According to TVLine, Clancy Brown is joining the cast as the show’s main villain. The actor is playing Kurt Caldwell, the unofficial mayor of the small town of Iron Lake, who is “powerful, generous, loved by everyone.” According to the character’s description, “he’s a true man of the people.”

“[Kurt] realized the American dream by going from driving big rigs, just like his father did, to now owning several trucks and the local truck stop,” the description says. “If he’s got your back, consider yourself blessed. But should you cross Kurt, or hurt anyone that he cares for, God help you.”

At this time, it’s unknown if Iron Lake will be the main setting for the reboot. Nevertheless, it’s clear Dexter is in for some not-so-friendly company in these new episodes.

Back in 2013, Dexter ended on a rather controversial note that many fans still don’t know how to feel about. The series finale showed Dexter Morgan faking his own death and living under a new name as a lumberjack in Oregon.

The ending of Dexter is reportedly what caused Michael C. Hall to sign on for the reboot. In fact, in November, we learned that the series’ controversial ending may not play out at all in the revival.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the reboot, or season 9 as some are calling it, is set 10 years in the future where Dexter continues to live under a fake identity. As well, the series will not be a direct continuation of how season 8 ended.

“We basically do get to start from scratch,” Phillips said. “Ten years, or however many years, have passed by the time this will air, and the show will reflect that time passage. So far as the ending of the show, this will have no resemblance to how the original finale was. It’s a great opportunity to write a second finale.”

In a recent interview with the Daily Beast, Hall assures fans that this reboot is going to make up for how the series originally ended. It turns out that the actor wants the Dexter revival to have a satisfying ending as much as the fans do.

“Let’s be real: people found the way that show left things pretty unsatisfying,” he says. “And there’s always been a hope that a story would emerge that would be worth telling. I include myself in the group of people that wondered, ‘What the hell happened to that guy?’ So I’m excited to step back into it. I’ve never had that experience of playing a character this many years on.”

According to Deadline, production is set to begin in early 2021 with a tentative premiere date of fall 2021.
