Fresh from touring Europe with his band Nox Boys, Zack Keim releases a brand new solo single of Laurel Canyon-inflected country psych.
It’s a wonderful departure from what we’ve come to expect from Keim after catching his usual band Nox Boys this summer with their classic garage-rock sound and buzzing live shows. Canyon is a much more laidback affair, a folk-pop song painted with soft pastel hues that roll over his falsetto vocals. According to Keim, the song came to him whilst driving around as a takeaway delivery driver, the landscapes of the lyrics evoking a dreamy and nostalgic past. It’s a sweet earworm, one that seeps gently into your mind and doesn’t let go.
Over on the flip side of the single, released soon on Spain’s Action Weekend Records, we get Alice. Hitting a more country vibe, the song retains some of the loose garage sound, a ramshackle charm not too far from what we heard on the last Black Lips album, with even a touch of Bright Eyes in the mix.
Away from his usual vehicle, Zack Keim is proving that he can turn his talent to more styles and we’ll be holding out for the release of his next album.
