[hate5six] Zeta – November 22, 2021

Sometimes you fuck up when working with a band you love and then it’s on you to do better. The first time I saw Venezuela’s ZETA @joinzeta was back in 2018 when I hit up a Birds In Row/Portrayal of Guilt show in Philly and was unexpectedly blown away by this opening band I had never heard of. I was told they were stranded in the US and couldn’t go back home to Venezuela and basically just hopped from city to city to play shows on an endless tour. They’ve racked up well over 1000 shows and in the process have become one of the most captivating collectives to see live. I filmed them again a month later and had them over my house for an interview about their story (it’s on YouTube) while Dani made us arepas.

This past November they played a small bar in Asbury Park, NJ to like 15 people but they performed like the room was jammed, as if it was one of their sets at The Fest. This was the only show I could easily hit on the tour and decided to do a two camera shoot–one high and wide and one handheld. The set was frenetic and I was capturing all the shots I wanted. Eduardo punishing his drum set, placed in front of the stage, Dani weaving back and forth between playing guitar and synth, hitting his absurdly high cymbal (which he told me “was part of the show”), and Juanchi’s powerful vocals. I felt like I captured magic.

To make this story short, I got home and accidentally wiped one of my cards. The card with the handheld footage. I lost their footage along with the footage I captured of Latin screamo @entierralos. Devastating shit for someone obsessed with archiving and maintaining backups, but the wide angle was unscathed.

By the time I realized I fucked up, their tour was winding down and their next show was in Durham, NC, so the next morning I jumped in my car and drove 8 hours to do a 4 camera shoot w/multi-tracked and mixed audio.

Anyway, I just released the wide shot that wasn’t lost. Full set is up on youtube.com/hate5six and hate5six.com.

The NC set was incredible and I’ll have that video ready soon, it looks and sounds pristine. I’m gonna be doing something cool with Entierralos too at some point to make up for my error.

If you haven’t heard Zeta, go do it. Go see them live. Straight up captivating to witness. They have full tours lined up from February, March and April. You won’t regret it. This past Friday they released a live session with La Orquesta Abajo Cadenas, available on streaming platforms + YouTube.

I don’t know if I would have ever crossed paths with Zeta had I not gotten to that Birds In Row show early enough. 4 years later and I consider them good friends who I’ll travel 8 hours for on zero notice in hopes that I can show people this is a band worth checking out.

Live music is love.
