Despite Exile unveiled their new single “Riven Mirrors”, alongside a fast-paced and heavily distorted video that highlights the anxiety and desperation of the song itself. “Riven Mirrors” is a powerful track that embeds dynamic feelings of paralysis and isolation within fierce vocals and fiercer riffs. Lead singer Jei Doublerice comments on the single:

“Riven Mirrors” really came out of the blue. It all started from a drum pattern Simone came up with during the second lockdown, after we had decided to re-write the album from scratch. So we started from the drums, which is very atypical for us; Jei then proceeded to add an epic melodic chorus and the black-metal vibes, while Sanchez added the killer main riff. It all felt so organic and satisfying that we thought this track deserved a spotlight.

On the other hand, the lyrics reflect the anguish of that moment: the song is essentially about feelings of dissociation, paralysis and isolation. But it is also about the paradox of sharing solitude, and about the strange sort of relief that it can bring.

Here’s what the band had to say on the music video: “The music video is definitely on a par with the frenzied mood of the song. It is fast and ever moving, playing around with different lenses that distort the image and emphasize the sense of disorientation and anxiety. It was very exhausting to shoot since we had to take multiple group shots where we all had to move around a lot. We hope people will appreciate the sudden change and the contrast between the different atmospheres that both the song and the video open up to.”

Despite Exile delivers an elegant blend of rage and fury. Their sound is a mixture of death metal technicality, fast riffs with melodies, epic chants and raging vocals. After a two year break during which they renewed their line up, with the addition of a third guitar and finished writing their third album; they’re back with their new singles “Scepter” and “Riven Mirrors”
