For some weird reason, I pushed aside pop-punk music in the past couple of weeks. It’s not that I got bored by the pop-punk sound, but it seems to me that the pop-punk scene has been quiet for a while. I am positively sure there a lot of brand new recordings out there, but maybe I somehow missed all the news. Luckily, I stumbled upon Grimm Winter from Washington, DC. As far as I am informed, this a relatively new band that recently released a debut material on streaming services. The group recorded this recording by devotedly following the rules of DIY ethics, but their album sounds like it was recorded and produced in a decent recording studio.

This particular material contains seven profoundly emotive pop-punk compositions that are going way beyond this specific genre. Grimm Winter takes pop-punk as a primary base, but there are more genres involved along the way. Emo is probably one of the first elements you’ll stumble upon on this ear-appealing musical journey, but there are also sophisticated involvements of indie rock, indie pop, and alternative rock. Each one of these genres lurks around depending on the current mood and direction of the group. Still, they’re all thoroughly combined and implemented within each composition. These experimentations with several genres resulted in a beautiful collection of ear-appealing songs.

The lyrics are dealing with relationships, friendships, emotions, memories, various moods, moments, and circumstances. Grimm Winter thoroughly explored each one of these topics through their compositions, so their tunes sound emotive both sonically and lyrically. There’s a decent amount of melancholy, nostalgia, and sadness implemented in these tunes, but Grimm Winter pays a lot of attention to each segment of their album and keeps everything balanced from scratch to finish. Melancholic melodies are intervening with a generous amount of dynamics, so this material doesn’t sound too slow. Speaking of tempos, this material carries something for everyone, and you’ll instantly fall in love with this material if you’re searching for indie rock-infused pop-punk music.

The group recorded this album remotely in different spaces and then mixed, produced, mastered it together online, but you’ll able to hear each tone delivered by these talented musicians. It’s more than a decent debut that unquestionably demands your attention. The album is available on streaming services such as Spotify and Bandcamp. Give it a couple of listens and decide for yourself.
