In today’s world, where modern production and various generic trends dictate the music taste of the crowd, it’s hard to stumble across a band that produces music in the way it is meant to be – raw and genuine. In Medias Res is one such band, and their release Penny/Adequate is a testament to their short but impactful existence as a band. Born out of the legendary 2 Keys House in St. Louis, Missouri, In Medias Res has been around from 2001 to 2004, and during that time, they established themselves as one of the most influential bands on the post-punk scene. Penny/Adequate combines their lost recordings and Adequate 7″. It’s a masterful blend of punk attitude, indie rock sensibilities, and post-punk/post-hardcore energy guaranteed to get your blood pumped.

One of many things that set In Medias Res apart from other bands is their ability to merge seemingly disparate genres into a unique slab of sonic artistry. Tracks like 1994, Untitled #1, Sleep, and Untitled #2 are perfect examples. These compositions define what In Medias Res tried to accomplish with their multigenre experimentations, and you’ll be pleasantly surprised how they achieved such sound where all music genres are equally present in the mix without spoiling each other. The entire band shines bright by delivering excellent themes, leads, progressive chord progressions, guitar riffs, equally complex basslines, and intense drumming sequences. The remainder of the album isn’t an exception either. Tracks like F# Tambourine, Cased D, The House, Old Buzzard, C# Descending, Cf#G, or C Song are also standout songs of this vinyl release. These compositions showcase their tremendous talent, creativity, experience, and ideas, but also their ability to switch seamlessly between melodic indie rock and aggressive post-punk.

In addition to their musicianship, In Medias Res are also known for their ability to craft thoughtful, socially conscious lyrics that explore a variety of themes. Both recordings explore a comprehensive collection of topics in a very unique way. The production is exceptional, without feeling overproduced, and each instrument has more than enough room to breathe, resulting in a luxurious and organic ambiance. Penny/Adequate serves as a legacy of In Medias Res. Their ability to blend genres and tackle complex themes while maintaining their punk roots is a testament to their skill and experience as musicians. Whether you’re a die-hard post-punk fan or just looking for something new to sink your ears into, this album is worth checking out. With its infectious energy and thoughtful lyrics, Penny/Adequate will captivate listeners who like their post-punk music as thoughtful and profoundly complex.

Once again, Expert Work Records did an outstanding job. Penny/Adequate comes housed in a high-quality cardboard sleeve. You’ll find a monochrome photo of a house on the front cover, something that emo, screamo, and indie bands used to put on their vinyl sleeves, while the other side carries a tracklist and label info. The skillfully assembled inlay reveals a band photo collage and more info about these recording sessions. Expert Work Records pressed this on ultra-limited mixed-color vinyl, so each record is one of a kind. There’s also a standard black vinyl pressed into 100 copies. Therefore, head to Expert Work records web store and pick up your weapon of choice.
