NAW come from Atlanta, GA, and play loud, fast, hardcore-infused noise rock type of thing, with the occasional atmospheric and moody breaks. Yep, if you’re into heavy in-your-face rock presented by a diverse bunch of beautiful human beings—their new Head Pain LP might serve you pretty damn well.

The album opener “Brain Bleed” (also featured in the upcoming DIY Conspiracy #5 compilation) sets the pace with gritty guitars, guttural screams and fast drums. You can tell that that’s gonna be quite the journey from there.

“Weed Them and Reap” is a bit slower and moodier, and is absolutely one of the most “catchy” tracks in Head Pain, great little guitar riff going on in there, I have it stuck in my head for like a week now. It vaguely reminds me of all-time favorite bands like Nü Sensae and White Lung, but of course that’s a fairly personal observation.

Of course, the political charge and corresponding lyrical content of NAW is very important, as their songs catch on various topics, toxic masculinity being one of them. It’s very obvious in “If You Can’t Respect My Big Goddamn Dick, We’re Gonna Have a Fucking Problem“, which is the second video/single from the album. Lovely track.

“Former Feminist” is also worth a mention in that respect, offering some of the best political but also personal lyrics on the album.

Overall, truly powerful album and one of my favorite independent US releases this year, Head Pain will most certainly make waves in the Noise Rock community, and hopefully we will see more of this interesting and creative outlet!

NAW’s latest came out like a month ago and has been recorded and mixed by Matt Washburn at LedBelly Sound Studios and mastered by Joel Hatstat at High Jump Media. You can listen and buy it from their Bandcamp page and there’s also a vinyl preorder goin on, so by any means grab a copy if you like it and want to support the band directly.

But we need your help to continue. If you appreciate our work, please consider donating to help keep the site running.
