The first time I heard about the Texas hardcore punk band Nosferatu was through their fittingly titled Sounds of Hardcore EP, which was uploaded on No Deal’s YouTube channel five years ago. Throughout their existence, the band has gained a real cult status among fans of dirge-filled, no-frills hardcore punk.

In short, Nosferatu are channeling the relentless aggression of bands like Void, Koro, Die Kreuzen, and Siege down to the T, including the deadly raw and primitive production, and all that with a ferocious amount of energy and determination. Recorded at D4MT Labs and released in September 2022 through five different DIY labels, Society’s Bastard is the latest and final release for Nosferatu’s ear-wrecking existence. In the course of its short but straight to the point 11 songs, or 13 tracks if you count the intros and interludes, Society’s Bastard integrates everything we love about the most primal and violent American hardcore. The drums are totally pummeling and galloping, the bass is battering along with whiplashing, distorted guitars, while the vocals battle all that ultra-energetic, raw and pissed-off production in a dazzling cacophony of nihilistic rage.

As I mentioned earlier, the word of mouth is that Society’s Bastard is Nosferatu’s final release. In their obscure back-catalog, the band has released a large number of cassette demos, live recordings and rare to find 7-inch EPs, along with the two collected vinyl LPs—A Field of Hope (Discography) via Neck Chop Records and Solution A through La Vida Es Un Mus in 2019. Society’s Bastard is another ferocious cassette release where the band plays at such breakneck speeds that the whole 15-minute record fits on just one side, so you can flip the tape and repeat all over again. I love these double-sided tapes, it’s the true essence of fast, underground punk. All go, no slow! If you have somehow missed this band, now it’s your time to catch up—Texas hardcore at its finest!

P.S. Nosferatu are absolutely menacing live, see for your yourself in the video down below!
