Recorded in Corinth, Greece in 2020 and self-released on March 18th, 2021, with digipak CDs available from the band, this self-titled EP is the debut release from Nyksi (ΝΥΞΗ in Greek), that consist of Thanos on guitar, bass and vocals, and Nightchild on drums and vocals.

The duo play a style of blackened crust that would endear them to fans of bands like Okkultokrati. With their punk-rock roots on display throughout, they use blackened reverb laden vocal textures and a dark aesthetic while borrowing at times from old school heavy metal, the intro riff to third track “Δυσοίωνο Μέλλον” being a good example of this. They steer clear, however, of the blistering tempos, blast beats and shrieking vocals of some kinds of black metal and instead let the d-beats do the walking.

The record starts as they mean to go on, with heavy distorted guitars and guttural vocals colouring in the driving beats that lead into the walking 1-2 punch of the track’s breakdown of sorts. The second track continues very much in the same vein, d-beating their way through the spaces between the punctuated head banger riffs. The third track’s longer intro builds suspense before the almighty beat arrives, making it the all the more powerful when it does, this is possibly the most dynamic track and personal highlight of the EP with more breakdowns and impassioned vocal sections than the others. The fourth and final track wastes no time getting to the action with some heavy metal fist pumping rhythms kicking off the track proper.

The whole record doesn’t deliver a whole lot of surprises, not that it’s a bad thing in this case. I don’t think that Nyski are trying to reinvent the wheel with this release, cuz if it ain’t broke… right? Their style of classic crust punk is there for the believers and is unlikely to win over any outsiders to the genre, but those who are already converted are bound to lap this up.
