Punk Politics # 129 Conscious Hip Hop wins at the Grammys… Mostly

I really haven’t paid attention to the Grammys since I heard about Kanye (now Klanye) wildin’ out during Taylor’s win. No particular reason. I caught this last one and there were many great moments, a couple of which are gonna be relevant and talked about here. But first a not so amazing moment that was still a win. Killer Mike (1/2 of Run The Jewels and amazing talent from the ATL) swept the hip hop categories this year in an untelevised ceremony and was arrested shortly after. First the win, this album Michael was a win for every KRS ONE, Dead Prez, Artson and any other conscious hip hop you wanna throw in just as much as it was a win for every T.I.  Jay Z and Dre. Mike and RTJ are both sides of the conscious militant and the wild thug muthafucka on a chaos run and none of the bullshit from a securiKaren can take that away. I’m not sure hip hop has ever been televised on the grammys and it’s way early in the day where literally only guests that care about hip hop have shown up. Kind of an entertainment back of the bus during black history month. Jay Z had an amazing speech about this when he was accepting a global hip hop award. Endless props that his entire speech was about standing up for his community. Later Travis Scott had unplanned parts of his performance which was destroying the set with steel chairs that non one else knew were there. I thought this was already cool for a lot of reasons as I saw it. Both of those moments gained so much more gravity and awesome after learning they were more or less in direct response to a larger than usual insult to hip hop from music’s whiteness guards. Mike was trying to enter a door and the security guard was telling Mike he had to go through a checkpoint after he’s already been on stage and therefore been cleared to enter. Understandably Mike wasn’t cool with this and some kind of altercation occurred that resulted in LAPD gettin called and Mike gettin cuffed. Let’s be real about what it was. The guard was feelin her whiteness and felt this black male had to prove his validity to her. If anyone has info to doxx her out, please email Dr. Rashad Richey so he can put her on front street as he’s asked for. Along with the arrest Mike was full on perp walked by the piggies. Even if cops had come, this wouldn’t have happened to Will Smith. It would’ve been quiet and not on camera because he’s accepted by whiteness whereas artists who truly have something to say ain’t ever gonna be because white people on the whole can’t deal with not being the main character. It’s more America’s fault than any actual people. Shit culture is gonna create shit people, it’s simple math. Enough of the bad. One final good that I heard Mike mention that I hadn’t thought about, this is also a win for EL-P because he did a shitload of work on this record as well as being on a track. There’ll be links below to some really good commentary and the album below because it’s above and beyond fuckin fire!
