I’ve been familiar with this band for years when their debut album came out a couple of years ago but never gave them a proper review. Somerset Thrower is an interesting quartet emanating from Long Island, NY that unquestionably deserves your full attention. Besides their outstanding debut named Godspeed, published by Dead Broke Rekerds, the group also published a double single on a cassette called Rain, Falling Swingers 7”, and a split cassette release with Mouth. All these releases are showcasing bright ideas and excellent musicianship of the entire group, but their most advanced recording is shifting music boundaries to the next level.

Somerset Thrower introduced their brand new album in November of 2020. Paint In Memory carries ten exceptional compositions, fully stacked with meaningful messages and outstanding musical performance. Somerset Thrower combines various musical genres to achieve a unique ambiance, which undoubtfully pleases the listening apparatus. Perhaps the hardcore foundations built upon their admiration towards alternative rock are the most dominant ones, but you’ll also stumble upon genres such as emo, indie rock, pop-punk, and post-hardcore. However, these additions are not spoiling the initial ambiance that the group tries to achieve. The beauty of Paint In Memory lays beneath all these textures of sound, thoughtfully layered until ultimate perfection.

There’s a notable dosage of melancholy involved in their polyphonous articulations, mainly showcased through detailed guitar dualities. The rhythm guitar bursts with powerful riffages, while the leading guitar demonstrates delicate melancholic themes during the complete album. Their tremendous musicianship and the comprehensive collection of chord progressions, harmonizations, thematics, and other virtuosities are going beyond comprehension in so many cases throughout the album. Slightly distorted bass guitar contributes to these melodies with chunky but massive low-end tones, mainly showcased through appropriate basslines. These low-end maneuvers are binding guitars with profoundly energetic drumming performance that provides stability and precision to the group. Lead vocals are liberating another dosage of melodies through series of clean chants, but there are some moments throughout the album where you can hear ferocious screams.

Paint My Memory is a perfect representative of the contemporary underground scene, but the group escapes all the unnecessary categorizations into a singular genre. You’ll notice how alternative rock, indie rock, emo, pop-punk, post-hardcore, and hardcore scenes heavily influenced their songwriting, but Somerset Thrower are composing unique music by breaking all the rules. Paint My Memory comes in a couple of vinyl variants. Head over to Triple-B Records or Dead Broke Rekerds for more detailed info about ordering.
