It’s impossible to talk about anything psychobilly, rockabilly, rock’n’roll, and punk rock and avoid the renowned name in the game such as The Meteors. Since their inception in 1980, these pioneers of the genre paved the way for the hordes of psychobilly/rockabilly musicians and served as inspiration for countless contemporary artists. The Meteors are also one of the most prolific band in the game, with nearly 25 full-lengths, 15 live recordings, 29 singles and extended plays, and 20 compilation appearances. Of course, these are not exact numbers, and maybe this amount exceeds my calculations. With a P. Paul Fenech as the driving force, principal singer/songwriter, and the only remaining original band member, there’s no wonder why The Meteors are one of the best out there. His songwriting/composing abilities include some traditional rock’n’roll maneuvers but also exceed way beyond the standards of the genre.
Recently, The Meteors released a brand new full-length material named Skull N Bones. As far as I am informed, this is their first studio recording in five years if we exclude their live album Best Of Live, published on vinyl last year. Skull N Bones carries twelve compositions, performed in a classic psychobilly/rockabilly/rock’n’roll manner. Besides brand new tracks, there are a couple of oldies such as Dateless Nights, We Will Rise, Rocking Zombie, mixed by Zed and Rocking Zombie. There’s also a decent cover of Gary Gilmore’s Eyes, performed by The Adverts. Musicwise, The Meteors are continuing at their pace by delivering tremendous psychobilly/rockabilly sound that defines this legendary group for more than four decades. The best part about this material is the number of catchy rock’n’roll themes delivered through reverby guitar scales, ear-appealing chord progressions, abrasive riffs, and other traditional rock’n’roll virtuosities. The Meteors paved the way for this type of sound, so these are maneuvers they’re feeling most comfortable with while playing. P. Paul Fenech pulls off all these sonic acrobatics with such ease, but the remaining portion of the group also showcases tremendous musicianship.
The rhythm section keeps everything dynamic and stable as much as possible through series of cleverly constructed basslines and solid rhythmic segments. The sound of double bass unquestionably spices up the guitar segments with warm-sounding tones but at the same time serves as a binding element between guitars and drums. Excellent drumming offers loads of rhythmic sequences, accentuations, and fills that are defining psychobilly/rockabilly sound as much as guitars. Skull N Bones offer loads of entertainment through thoughtfully arranged compositions, which will satisfy even the pickiest admirers of the genre. This album comes on a limited clear green vinyl, limited red vinyl, and compact disc.
