Nashville’s Alicia Bognanno, otherwise known by her stage name Bully, gave us the gift of another deeply personal, beautifully rasping album this year. Diaristic and open without being depressing or falling into any indie tropes, Lucky for You maintains levity with bouncy, energetic drum parts and playful melodies, as well as Bully’s signature use of glitching feedback. It’s a balance between the heavy lyricism that feels, and sounds, like a real-life wave of human emotion. From sobriety to heartbreak, there is a relatability that intensifies as Bognanno shrewdly reveals more of herself to the audience, though with her addictive, brusque vocals, she proves that she is not here to blend in.
