Eddie Vedder and Jack White were the featured acts at Day 2 of the Ohana Festival in Dana Point, CA at Doheny State Beach. Jack White blew away fans with a tight 55 minute set. The shortened festival setlist energized White and his band, who packed in his past White Stripes and Ranconteurs hits with more recent solo cuts at a frenetic pace. White has become a master showman over the years, getting fans involved with songs like “Seven Nation Army” and “We’re Going To Be Friends.”
Eddie Vedder and the Earthlings headlined, with Vedder mentioning joining Night 1 headliner Stevie Nicks onstage on Friday. Vedder said he barely slept Friday, but for good reason, as he couldn’t wipe the smile off his face from playing with the Fleetwood Mac icon.
The Earthlings, featuring Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith and Josh Klinghoffer, ex-Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney, and Andrew Watt, energized Vedder, feeling like rock’s biggest supergroup in years, especially when Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell joined for a Tom Petty tribute during the set.
Vedder also got very emotional before “Brother The Cloud,” mentioning the pain of losing loved ones, but that feeling the loss means you truly loved them, and to hold onto that feeling. Vedder also had the fans give a round of applause for the families of the band members, who often don’t see their loved ones for extended periods as they go on tour.
Ed stopped the show at one point to check on an audience members, who fortunately was fine. He compared it to stopping a vinyl record and getting it going again when the Earthlings picked back up and resumed the song.
The set was focused on new Earthlings material, this combined with a big name band backing Eddie made it feel more revitalized than Vedder’s past solo Ohana performances, as he finds ways to reinvent himself as he continues his legendary career.
Eddie played Temple of the Dog’s “Hunger Strike” near the end of the set with Andrew Watt, as fans could definitely feel the spirit of the late great Chris Cornell.
Definitely check out The Ohana Festival if you have never been, Doheny State Beach is undoubtably the best setting for a festival in the United States. It’s exactly the setting Eddie Vedder was looking for, as he said during his set.
